RICHARD I'ANSON

Richard I’Anson is a freelance photographer who has built a career on his twin passions for travel and photography. Over the past 29 years he has travelled the world, amassing a substantial and compelling collection of images of people and places – in more than 85 countries on all seven continents – for clients, book projects and distribution as stock imagery.

Richard received his first camera as a gift from his parents when he was 16 and has been infatuated with photography ever since. After studying photography, film and television at Rusden State College in Melbourne, Australia, he worked in a camera store and minilab before going freelance in 1982. I’Anson is a double Master of Photography with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). In 2007 Capture Magazine Australia judged him to be Australia’s top travel photographer in its Top Photographers Awards.

Richard’s work is published worldwide in books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, calendars, posters, cards and websites. In particular, his images appear on more than 60 covers and on the pages of over 500 Lonely Planet books and print products. Richard has published nine books: Chasing Rickshaws (1998), Rice Trails (2004); Travel Photography (2000, 2004 and 2009 editions), Urban Travel Photography (2006), Australia: 42 Great Landscape Experiences (2006), Nepal: Kathmandu Valley, Chitwan, Annapurna, Mustang, Everest (2007) and India: essential encounters (2010).

Richard speaks regularly about his work to business groups, at photography events and universities. He runs workshops teaching all aspects of travel photography for individuals and small groups and leads photography tours to international destinations. He is also much sought after as a judge for photography and travel industry competitions.

His photography is represented by Lonely Planet Images (www.lonelyplanetimages.com) the stock agency that he founded in 1997. When he’s not on the road Richard lives in Melbourne, Australia.
